Sterilize Microorganisms with a Germicidal UV Lamp

Ultraviolet light is why you get sunburnt after spending too much time outdoors. The short wavelength that keeps UV light invisible to our eyes also affects its energy. This energy can damage the molecular bonds of genetic material, like that of microorganisms including mildew and bacteria. The results may completely kill microbes or simply stop them from replicating, but the benefits are generally similar.

It’s best to install UV lamps straight into your HVAC system. When air flows through during a heating or cooling cycle, airborne microbes come in contact with the UV light as they move past. You can maintain balanced temperatures while also increasing air quality. And given that the germicidal lamp is limited to your ductwork, you don’t need to worry about being affected by the UV rays.

A UV light mounted in the ductwork is known as an air sanitizing light, and is most effective for microbes currently airborne. An air sanitizing light can be integrated with the HVAC system’s blower motor, where the light only turns on during an active heating or cooling cycle.

There are also lights designed for specific HVAC hardware like an air conditioner’s condenser coils. These coil sanitizing lights should help keep mold and mildew from benefiting from the coils’ moisture.
